Summer Vibes Only

DAY 4 OF 23

FOUR THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN DATING

You were created for God. You were created to bring God glory and serve Him. That means you don’t need someone else to complete you. You weren’t made to be a girlfriend or boyfriend. God made you to be a son or daughter first. If you try to find someone who will fill that gap in your life, you’ll be really disappointed.

Don’t think about seriously dating until you have a job. I’m not saying you need a 401k before you grab a cup of coffee with someone, but I am saying that dating has a purpose — and it’s not so you can sit on the couch and watch movies all the time. That leads to regrets. If mom is paying for all your dates, you’re not ready to be dating yet.

Don’t worry about romance too soon. Seriously. You’ve got the rest of your life to worry about that stuff. Have fun, go do fun stuff together, hang out in friend groups. Make memories, not regrets.

Get some good examples in your life. You need to have a vision for what a good relationship is — not just what you saw your parents do or what your older brother tells you about having a girlfriend. Find an older couple who love Jesus and each other, and try to be like them. Or, talk to your Fuse Group leaders about what a godly relationship looks like.

Be intentional. Have fun. Date well. Make more memories and fewer regrets. Love Jesus, serve Him, and love His people. Don’t make marriage an idol. Take any desires that are not from God, and submit them to His design for love. Partner with Him in putting goodness and beauty and justice and life into the world.

We don’t need any more couples who are careless with their sexuality and careless with their dating lives. If you want to be single, then be single and rock it. You don’t need someone else to live the way God intended for you to. But if you do decide to date, do it the right way. If something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right.

Respond

  • Is your life centered around Jesus? Are you living the kind of life you would want to be brought into? Be honest here.

  • If you’re dating someone now, is your relationship centered around Jesus? Are you both actively trying to follow Jesus? Are you pursuing His love first before you pursue a cute boy or girl?

  • What conversations do you need to have this week?

Maybe you need to encourage your boyfriend/girlfriend with how well you see them following Jesus and how God-honoring your relationship is. This is awesome!

Maybe it’s time to make a change, so you’re putting Jesus first in your relationship. A life or relationship apart from Him is exhausting and stressful.

If you’re not sure what to do next, pray about it. Ask God if this relationship is healthy and pointing you toward Him. God wants what’s best for you. He’ll show you the way.
