Freedom From Addiction

DAY 4 OF 14

For years my addictions drove me into actions that resulted in my being arrested for breaking the law. When I broke the law, I had to pay a penalty. I served jail time, paid fines, and went through a period of probation. And law enforcement had the legal right to enforce these penalties because I was in the wrong.

In this sense, spiritual law is the same: I sinned and broke God’s law for years while I was an addict. In doing so I gave the enemy the legal right to torment me. Spiritually speaking, sin opened the door for the enemy to sink his hooks into me.

To break free from these hooks and chains, a penalty for my wrongdoings needed to be paid in full. This is what Jesus did on the cross. “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all.” (1 Timothy 2:6)

Christ, who never sinned (2 Cor. 5:21), stood in our place and paid the price for our wrongdoings. When we confess our sins, we are admitting that we were wrong. We are accepting God’s forgiveness through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. That is why it’s called the Good News because someone paid the cost of my spiritual lawbreaking and in return gives me undeserved favor and a clean slate. That someone is Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

It is His abundant grace that sets us free and then empowers us to live free.

Prayer Tip

Thank God for His grace; gratitude helps us in this process. Next, find and confess your sins to a spiritual leader. During this process ask God to give you a deeper understanding of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. Remember, every one of us has sinned and fallen short. (Romans 3:23)

Action Step

Dive into confessing to God. Why wait? In confessing our wrongdoings and receiving prayer from another believer, we make things right with God. It is then that God’s grace washes over us and sets us free. Spend time with a fellow believer who is walking righteously with God and confess and receive God’s glorious forgiveness and empowering grace.
