Freedom From Addiction

DAY 5 OF 14

On the cross, Jesus took your pain and sorrows upon Himself (Isaiah 53:4-5). The pain, the sorrow, and the stress are no longer yours to carry once you are reborn in Christ. He wants you to cast your pain and shame upon Him because He cares for you, and His desire is for you to live in His freedom.

Imagine walking around all day and carrying a giant backpack full of rocks. That unneeded weight is bound to make you tired, cause aches and pains, affect your mood, and question your God-given purpose.

Spiritually speaking, carrying stress, worry, and constant sorrow is like carrying a backpack full of heavy spiritual rocks. When you are weighed down by those painful spiritual rocks it puts additional strains and demands on you. Yet you were created to live free from the weight of those pains and sorrows.

Through Christ’s finished work on the cross, as we turn to Him, we can unburden ourselves of unnecessary pain, sorrow, and stress that will come, at times, to each of us in this life. We can, and should, regularly take time to connect with God in prayer and cast our worries at the foot of the cross.

Prayer Tip

Take five minutes and cast your anxiety on God—not at God—there is a difference. He wants to take it from you because He loves and cares about you. Give your burdens to Him. After pouring out your soul to Him, take a few minutes to sit in His presence and listen for His voice.

Remember, prayer is a conversation between you and God, and when He speaks it imparts life to us.

Action Step

If you need to, set a reminder on your phone to go off once a day. Remind yourself that God “tenderly cares for you” and asks that you would pour out your anxiety to Him, not on social media, by complaining and gossiping, or through the use of drugs and alcohol. Rather, pour out your anxiety through prayer to a Father who loves and cares for you.
