Jesus-Centered Family Devotions

DAY 2 OF 7

Read aloud: “After his baptism…a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.’” (Matthew 3:16-17) Say: God told Jesus he was loved…and that Jesus brought God great joy. I want you to know the same thing. One at a time, tell each family member he or she is loved…and why that family member brings you joy. Mention a specific trait or characteristic—but not an accomplishment. Tying approval to accomplishments can send a message that your love must be earned, and that’s not the message you want to send. When you’ve finished affirming each family member, make time for them to affirm you as well. Then say: Let’s tell Jesus why he brings us great joy, too. As a family, share why knowing and loving Jesus brings you joy. Then say: The better we know and love Jesus, the more joy we’ll feel. Let’s ask Jesus what he wants us to know about him and listen to what he says. Sit quietly, eyes closed, for one minute as we listen for Jesus to answer this question: Jesus, what do you want us to know about you? After one minute of silence, ask if anyone thinks Jesus might have spoken to them in some way—a word, a picture, a Bible verse. If so, talk about it.
