Creation

DAY 9 OF 9

Why did God create humans?

God created humans to worship him by bearing his image for the world.

What does it mean to be made in God’s image? To be made in God’s likeness?

It can be startling to realize that you, the one who stares back from the mirror each morning, were created by God to reflect who he is to the world around you. He wants your love to be so radical that it stops those around you in their tracks. He wants his forgiveness and mercy to pour out of you and draw the lost and broken back to himself.

He wants you to shine with the certain knowledge that when the God of the universes considers you, he calls you his masterpiece. That’s where you should always  place your identity: on the unshakeable recognition that God delights in you. He knows you more intimately than you know yourself and he proclaims that you are his. No more striving, no more seeking, no more longing to find your value, worth, or purpose.

When we place our sense of worth in the number of likes on Instagram or the cheers of the crowd, we make ourselves vulnerable to envy, jealousy, fear, and ultimately failure. Whatever it is, there will always be someone just a little better at it than us. Are you ready to stop pursuing what God has already given you?

The Bible is clear. Being made in God’s image is an inescapable fact of our existence. In our very nature we were created to be in relationship with God, to be loved by God, and to overflow with love for others. It is in this relationship that we discover the confidence, joy, and peace that we’ve been running after for so long.

That’s what it means to be in God’s image. No matter how good you’ve been. No matter how lost or bad you feel. No matter whether or not your family is proud of you, or even if you are proud of yourself. What you do or how you feel doesn’t change the fact. You were made in the image of God.

That’s your intrinsic value—your worth—and there’s nothing you can do to change it. Your worth will always come from who you are—created in God’s image—and never from what you do or don’t do.

Reflect on what it means to be made in the image of God. Think about how much you’re loved by God and how he delights in you simply because you’re his creation.
