DAY 8 OF 9

How did God create humanity?

God created humanity as male and female in his own image.

We live in a complicated world. It’s always been that way, but different time periods seem to face different questions. In our world today, the question of gender and sexuality has become especially complicated and controversial. Is there such a thing as gender, or do people just decide for themselves their sexual identity, regardless of the anatomy they have from birth?

These are difficult and controversial questions we all encounter sooner or later. What does the Bible have to say?

Genesis 1 tells us that God created us—both male and female—in his image and likeness. So, right at the very beginning of the Bible we see that God made both male and female in his image and likeness, so that they could both have a relationship with him and serve the world on his behalf. This makes it clear that male and female are equal in the sight of God.

But does this mean that men and women are the same? Does this mean that there is no meaningful difference between them, or that a person can choose what they’d like to be, regardless of their anatomy?

No.

The Bible clearly tells us that males and females are equal but different. The flourishing of the world depends upon the creativity that comes when these differences combine. The Bible also tells us that intimate relationships only work properly when they’re between a male and a female.

When the voices get louder and the arguments more pointed, it can be easy to lose sight of the truths of God’s word. But just as we can rely on true north to guide us home when we’re lost and confused, we can count on God’s truth to put the pieces in order and to guide our hearts, thoughts, and actions.

As you wrestle and pray through these complicated issues, ask God to give you wisdom and strength from Scripture and from your church community.
