DAY 4 OF 9

Is there more than one God?

There is only one living and true God, who exists eternally as three Persons in loving relationship. God alone is worthy of our worship.

In the ancient world, most people believed in many gods. That’s just the way it was. You had national gods and city gods and local gods and family gods. And most people had idols—handcrafted representations of a god, sort of like an ancient action figure—of these gods. They knew that the idols weren’t real, but it made them feel closer to the god.

Fast forward to today, and you see many different religions followed by many different people. You may even have neighbors, classmates, or teammates who belong to a different religion than yours. Many people believe that all religions are equally right and lead to the same place; that it doesn’t really matter what you believe, who you worship, or how you live, as long as you’re kind to everyone. This is called religious pluralism. But, just as God told his people of Israel long ago to worship him alone and not follow other gods, so he tells us the same thing today. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob alone is to be worshiped.

And that is good news! God has revealed to us who he is so we can worship him and him alone rightly. God invites everyone from every religion to turn to him for salvation. And when we turn to him, he invites us with open arms. We, as Christians, have the privilege to point people in our lives to the one true God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Spend time in prayer reflecting on God’s mercy. Thank God for the opportunity to worship him and know him. Ask him to show you areas in your life where you’ve wrongly placed other beliefs or practices in a higher place than him. Then, ask God for opportunities to tell others about who he is and how they can worship God too.
