DAY 4 OF 5

I AM HE

At First, the woman at the well thought Jesus was a stranger. She was shocked that a Jewish man would speak to her, a Samaritan woman, much less ask her for a drink (John 4:9). This would mean that He would have to drink from her water jar, and in that culture, the Jews and Samaritans didn’t even talk, much less share a Yeti. The relationship continued to progress with Jesus letting her in on a profound truth that not even His disciples understood: the concept of living water.

We learn as the story progresses, that she had a poor reputation with men in her society. It would seem that she was an empty well, looking to be filled. Jesus addresses this issue in her life by telling her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you have now is not your husband” (John 4:18). Now she believes that Jesus is no longer a stranger, but a prophet. She goes on to say, “I know a Messiah (called Christ) is coming” (John 4:25). Jesus then reveals to her who He is. “I, the one speaking to you, I am He.” She now knew Him as Lord.

Jesus loves us just as He loved the Samaritan woman. He breaks through our social barriers. He meets us right where we are. He leads us to self-awareness. He shows us where true life comes from, and He reveals Himself to us in intimate, personal ways. He wants us to know Him as Lord.
