If You Only Knew

DAY 1 OF 5

Thirsty

We all know what it feels like to be thirsty. When You Exercise or when you wake up in the night and your mouth is dry, all you can think about is getting to water. When Jesus met the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, the Bible says He was tired from His journey and probably thirsty, so He sat down by this well to rest and get a drink. Jesus was fully God and fully man, so He understood physical thirst. In a divine appointment, a Samaritan woman came to draw water from this well. Jesus immediately started up a conversation by asking her, “Will you give me a drink?” (John 4:7). She was confused because in that day and age, the Jews and Samaritans did not associate with one another. She replied, “How can you ask me for a drink? You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan” (John 4:9). Jesus then replies, “If you only knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water” (John 4:10).

Their conversation revolves around thirst. He had asked her for water and now He is telling her that “if she only knew” who He was, she would have asked Him for water. This interaction was never about Jesus getting a drink, but about Jesus leading her to thirst for salvation. He meets us right where we are and teaches us in ways we can understand. “If we only knew” Jesus could quench our spiritual thirst, would we ask Him for a drink?
