St. James says in chapter 1:17, “[God] does not change like shifting shadows.” What this means is that his love for you is not based on your performance, but it is based on an unshakeable decision he made in his divine mind from all eternity. When you are looking for meaning in events all around you, when you are tempted from painful events in your life to conclude that God is absent or powerless or aloof or condemning, just remember that his steadfast purpose for you will never waver. He will never stop loving you. And he will never tire of showing you mercy and forgiveness.
