Burnout Epidemic

DAY 6 OF 6

Burnout Epidemic: Part VII

Harvard Business Review discovered six key reasons behind the growing level of manager burnout. The final reason behind burnout is mismatched values and skills.

A friend of mine took a job once for a company that he had heard was unethical. But, due to the fact he had been unemployed for over a year, he accepted the position out of desperation.

It wasn’t long before he called me, stressed out because his boss had asked him to do some creative and unethical accounting. Eventually, he was also asked to help defraud the company’s bank.

He finally drew the line and realized he needed to resign.

1 Corinthians 15:3 teaches, “Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”

To avoid burnout, work for companies that align with your values.

Questions For Reflection

  • What are your company’s values? What does your company look like in practice? Are you proud to be associated with such an organization? How are you serving your customers? Would you ever want to be a customer of your business?
  • In the long run, what is more important, your values or your paycheck? Is working for an unethical company undermining the values you practice at home? Is your work negatively influencing you as a person?
