Deeper Devotional Times

DAY 3 OF 7

Day 3 - Devotional Time and the Bible

Welcome! We hope that you had the best devotional time yesterday praying with our God and getting to know Him a little better. Today we are going to go deeper into our devotional times and the Bible!

We all know that the Bible is a book. As a whole, it contains 66 individual books, different writing styles and some parts were written as far as 3500 years ago by lots and lots of different people. Pretty cool, huh, but did you know that the Bible is the Holy Spirit Word of God? We can connect with God through our own Bibles. The Bible can teach us how to live better, it can teach us to be better friends, it can show us how to love others better, it can be a light of hope in a dark place of our lives and ultimately it can help us to connect with our God.

So how does a book that was written so long ago help us to connect with God? Well like we said before, the Bible is the Holy Spirit Word of God. That means that God wrote everything in it with the help of some people along the way. The cool thing is that even over a long period of time He never changes who He is or His character. Even Jesus read the Scriptures when He lived on earth.

In Luke 4, we see Jesus go to a church in a town called Nazareth where He reads some scriptures to the people there. He is handed the scroll of Isaiah and starts to read from it. He is reading from what we now know as Isaiah 61. The scriptures that Jesus was reading from were written 740 years before He came to earth! After He finished reading, he announced to the people listening “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!” He was teaching the people that what God had promised hundreds of years ago was still relevant and true to them today. He was connecting people to God through the Scriptures that we now call the Bible. We can do the exact same thing with the Bible and God today!

Today’s devotional time - Take 10 minutes (maybe even 15 if you’re liking your devotional times) and spend some time reading the Bible. Start by praying to God and asking Him to speak to you through His word. Don’t stress about where to start reading just read the few scriptures on the next page. Make sure that you have a notepad and a pen to write anything down that you think you hear God speaking to you about. It could be Him telling you how much He loves you or it could be Him giving you some advice for whatever is going on in your life at the moment. Have fun reading!
