Deeper Devotional Times

DAY 1 OF 7

Day 1 - What is a “devotional time”?

So what is a “devotional time”? Google defines it as “a quiet time that you set aside to focus on God, spend time praying, and read God's word so you can reflect on your relationship with Him. Devotional time can take many forms, such as singing, meditation, reading the Bible, and even writing out your thoughts about God in a journal entry.”

Whether you have a daily devotional time or you’ve never had one in your life they can simply be defined as "time with God".

But what does that look like for us? Some people meditate on scripture, some people play worship music, some people read entire chapters of the bible and some people read one verse over and over. Whatever devotional time looks like for you, the important thing is that they are regular and that they involve connecting with God.

In the story of Jesus, we see Him time and time again separating Himself from his disciples and from the crowds to go to a private and quiet place with God. In Mark 1, Jesus gets up before the sun and goes to an isolated place to pray with God. In Luke 6, just before Jesus chooses His 12 disciples, He spends a night on a mountain praying to God. In Matthew 26, on the night before His crucifixion, Jesus goes to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray to God.

Today’s devotional time - Take 10 minutes (that’s not that much!) and find some space by yourself where you won’t be distracted. Read the verses after this page and then spend some time in prayer with God. It doesn’t have to be complicated and it doesn’t have to be fancy. Just talk to God and ask Him to talk to you. If you find yourself getting distracted simply refresh and start praying again. Make sure that you have a notepad to write down anything that you think you are hearing from God and if you don’t hear anything, that’s okay! Just write down the verses.
