Why Read The Bible?

DAY 5 OF 6

Faith Is Like a Muscle

You’ve probably heard the saying, “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” That is not a quote from the Bible, but it is a biblical principle. Every time you face a battle, your faith can get stronger.

Your faith is like a muscle. If you use it, it grows. If you don’t use it, you still have it, but it is flabby and of little use, not able to push anything big out of your path.

One way you build the muscle in your body is to lift weights or to push against a firm object. I’m no expert, but as I understand it, when you lift weights, you’re actually tearing down a muscle, and your amazing body works to repair and build it back up, bigger and better than before. That’s why trainers tell you not to lift weights every day. You must allow time for the body to do the build-up repair.

Your faith works the same way. When trouble comes along and you push against it (resist the devil) by reading, meditating on, and speaking God’s Word, your faith grows stronger and stronger, bigger and better than before. We resist the devil by pressing into the Word and using the authority given to us by God to prevail.

Don’t misunderstand. Great faith doesn’t come from great trials. Faith still only comes one way, from hearing and believing God’s Word. Many people go through great trials without their faith growing at all. It’s the Word that builds your faith.

First Peter 1:6-7 says, “So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world” (TLB).

The next time trouble comes along, you can rub your hands together with glee and say, “Oh yeah, I’ve seen what God does in situations like this. My faith is getting stronger and stronger. I’m expecting the victory!”
