Why Read The Bible?

DAY 3 OF 6

When I Was Desperate

When I was 37 years old my husband, who was a pastor, died suddenly. As you can imagine, it was a very traumatic time for me and my sons.

When trouble comes your way, it’s not the time to let go of the Word or drop your faith. Keep believing! The only sure way to do that is to keep reading and meditating the Word. Nothing but the Bible has the promise or power of God’s truth.

When my husband died, some friends gave me a brand new Amplified Bible as a gift to encourage me. I spent hours reading it. I had always been a Bible-reader, but at that time I spent every spare moment in it. I would run my finger down the pages like a five-year-old child learning to read. I absorbed it. I was desperate for it.

During that time period I fell more in love with Jesus than ever, and eventually I came out of the valley of shadow. I was victorious. This all happened while I was reading my Bible.

In the midst of my questions and fears, in the midst of leading a church by myself, and in the midst of raising two sons, I clung to God’s Word. I knew I had to. All of that time spent reading and meditating on the Bible settled me. It established my path. That is what it is meant to do. And it can do the same thing for you.

Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (kjv). The Word paints a picture of how God wants you to live. If you’re not looking at the Word, you’re liable to have the wrong picture, the wrong vision for your life. You’re liable to get caught up in the hopelessness of this world and live a much lower life than God wants to provide for you.

The Bible isn’t just another book. It is God’s very being. You can’t separate Him from His Word. His Word is His bond. We definitely want to hide the Word of God in our heart so that we believe it more than we believe the temporary things going on all around us.

Right now, you can’t see down the whole path for your life. But God’s Word is a light to that path. It can show you the way to go – it’s your blueprint and gives you a vision for what your life is supposed to look like. ...
