Nevertheless, for the oath’s sake and those who sat with him at supper, he commanded it to be given to her.”—Matthew 14:6-9 John the Baptist was murdered at the request of a demon-possessed woman. This was not natural anger but spiritual rage. John refused to endorse the unlawful union of the king and his new love. This is one of the attributes of rugged prophets—they will not bow to spiritual pressure when they perceive that something is wrong. The Jezebel spirit is a spiritual assassin that takes particular aim at all things prophetic. It uses various means to seduce its victims. In this story, we see a twofold perversion. First, Herodias captured the attention of the king so he would come into an immoral relationship with her. Second, she used the allure of her daughter’s dance to capture the attention of Herod and several men to ask for the head of the prophet. How can you discern the Jezebel spirit? Examine the motive and fruit. Most of the encounters I have had with this spirit were with people who had a track record of sowing discord. Also, examine the methodology. A Jezebel spirit does things in a sneaky way to avoid proper oversight. I do not write this to put fear in you but to arm you for battle and effectively equip you. We must rightly identify and avoid these spirits and their agendas.
