Day 2 - HONORING YOUR PARENTS In UNSUNG HERO, Rebecca tells her mother, “My dream is to be like you.” Arguably the greatest honor a daughter can show her mother is this wish, this prayer. All throughout UNSUNG HERO, we see the Smallbone children honor their parents and the family unit as a whole. They help out when times are tough, chipping in with the chores, the budgeting, and family business; they pray alongside their parents, giving thanks for times of abundance, and asking God for everything they need. The biblical theme of honoring parents is rooted in the Fifth Commandment, emphasizing respect and obedience to one's parents. This commandment reflects a profound recognition of the role parents play in nurturing and guiding their children. Honoring parents looks like showing gratitude, love, and obedience, acknowledging the wisdom and experience they bring to the family. (And sometimes it means choosing your stage name in honor of your grandparents, as Rebecca does when becoming Rebecca St. James after her grandfather.) Of course, this doesn’t mean parents are perfect: both Helen and David are flawed and human. In the film, Rebecca struggles with David as he deals with his own emotions in trying to secure a record deal for his daughter. But through their various trials, the family unit comes through stronger than before. In the end, the family members show honor to each other in their commitment to their faith and their family members. REFLECTION QUESTIONS * What does it mean to you to honor your parents?
