The Fatherless Journey for Guys

DAY 5 OF 10

# Day 5 - Talking to God My entire life, I have gotten into trouble for talking. Not that I was saying anything inappropriate in my conversation, but because I was talking when I was not supposed to. In kindergarten, I got into trouble for talking during class. It did not stop there; from kindergarten up through my college days, there were instances when I would get called out or held after class for talking. I guess I am what they call a “social bug.” I love to talk. Even at work, I was scolded on occasion for “socializing excessively”. I am not at all proud of these scoldings at school or work, but they happened. To change, I had to go against my natural desire to be a “social bug” by striving to refrain from socializing at inappropriate times. I can honestly say that I have improved over the years, but it is still a constant struggle. All throughout my fatherless journey I am glad that I had God to talk to. No matter who was there or who was not there, He was always available to listen to me. At times the journey was lonely, but I could talk to Him, and I could hear Him talk to me through the reading of His Scriptures. I would not have made it through the journey without God’s listening ear. I challenge you today to talk to God through your journey. I promise it will make the trip much easier! CHALLENGE: Today, there are multiple resources for communication. We can email, chat, text, talk on the phone, communicate on social media, and many other avenues. With all of these resources at our fingertips, there are times when we still may feel like we have no one to talk to. Do you ever just want someone to talk to? Why not talk to God? Talking to God is simple. You don’t have to log in, dial a number, or click send, but rather you just have to begin speaking to Him. He is always there, and He is always willing to listen to you. David is a great Biblical example of someone who continuously talked to God through the good and the bad times of life. The book of Psalms is filled with conversations that David had with God. These conversations reveal David’s ups and downs in his life. Some Psalms are happy, and some are sad. The Bible shows us in I Samuel 13:14 and Acts 13:22 that David was a man after God’s own heart. David loved to talk to God. David was not perfect, but he laid his burdens down at God’s feet. What about you? Who do you talk to in the good and bad times? Who will you talk to in the times to come? James 5:16b tells us that “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” This means that talking to God will bring great gain to your life. ACTION: Write a note to God thanking Him for the things He has done and is doing in your life. Talk to Him about your burdens and problems. Look back at this note often and see what God has done in your life. SUGGESTED PRAYER: Dear Lord, I thank You for loving me and giving me the ability to call upon You as often as I need. I ask that You would guide me as I begin to talk to You more. Please give me the strength to overcome my fatherless struggles, realizing that You are always there to listen to me. Amen.
