21 Days in the Book of John

DAY 6 OF 21

This is the longest chapter in John and is packed full of so many great principles. Here are a few things I’d like to point out about Chapter 6: 1. The miracle of feeding the 5,000 is the only 1 of Jesus’ 37 miracles that is recorded in all 4 gospels. Some believe that there were close to 15,000 people there as it was common to only count the men in those days. Others would argue it was mainly men as they were all on their way to Jerusalem for the Passover, an event women and children stayed home from. John was the only gospel that mentioned the little boy who had enough faith to give Jesus his bread and fish. The fish were probably very small, pickled fish and the bread would have been barley, a low-protein meal which was considered inferior to wheat. 2. The miracle sets the environment for the Bread of Life discourse that Jesus gives. In one situation He feeds the body and in the other, He feeds the soul. He talked about manna which was a gift of God given to the Israelites temporarily to sustain their physical lives. Jesus is the gift of God given to the entire world continuously to forever sustain our spiritual lives. 3. Jesus already knew that Judas was going to be the one to betray Him, even though the other disciples didn’t. Judas was well respected and probably the most trusted as he was in charge of the finances. He traveled with the others for over a year and none of them suspected he would betray Jesus.
