We have little to no control over what happens to us or what is said about us, but we are far from helpless when it comes to our actions. You have the power of choice, which gives you total control over how you will choose to respond. Charles Spurgeon said, “I have learned to kiss the wave that slammed me into the rock.” This is an unconventional, unexpected response to the things that catch us unaware. Spurgeon was not referring to a rocky coastline but to Christ the Rock. Each day is a new opportunity to determine how we will respond to life’s waves. If we become defensive, then any issue that comes to light will remain a problem. If we humble ourselves, then the trial allows the Holy Spirit to increase our depth and therefore our capacity for godliness. Jesus is the narrow gate that leads to abundant life. Just because the way is certain, it doesn’t mean it won’t be hard. It has been argued that a loving God would include everyone. He did. His invitation is to all who would come . The way was made, but the choice is ours. Which path will we take? Jesus will not force any of us through the narrow gate. He will not lie about what it will cost to follow him. He will not say it is easy when it’s not. He knows it is difficult because he has gone before us and is the very One inviting us to follow. The challenges of life reveal what we are made of without undermining who we are . Our identity is established in Christ, based on what he did rather than what we do or have done. You can trust light and truth to be faithful guides. God is light, the Source of all truth. Light illuminates, and the truth remains unchanged. God’s truth does not shift or morph as the balance of human power and thought changes. Truth is more than timeless . . . it is eternal. The road to God begins at the door: Jesus Christ.
