Spiritual Discernment

DAY 1 OF 10

What is Discernment?

Spiritual discernment—what is it? And why do we need it? Whenever discernment is mentioned, many people think of the gift of discernment noted alongside other spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12. But there is much more to discernment than simply the function of the gift of discernment! Not everyone will have the gift of discernment, whereas spiritual discernment is for every believer. And like a muscle, spiritual discernment is something that can be developed and strengthened.

Because we are talking about spiritual discernment (not natural discernment) I invite you to lean in and listen through a spiritual lens. As we dig deeper into spiritual discernment, ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you and reveal the Father’s intention to you. Spiritual discernment is not about information; it is about revelation.

As discernment may not be a word we use commonly in modern language, it is important to shift from what might be a vague concept to a solid understanding from scripture. One of the key verses for this devotional is found in Hebrews:

But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. (Hebrews 5:14, NIV).

The word distinguish in the NIV (discern in the KJV) is the same word used where the gift of discernment is mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:10. This word discern comes from the Greek word "diakrino" which means to separate thoroughly (that is, literally and reflexively). Briefly, it means to make a distinction, to determine, and give judgement. (Strong's Concordance G1252).

To discern or distinguish is to recognize one thing as different from another thing.

Spiritual discernment is essentially distinguishing between what is of God and what is not of God. There is a lot to unpack, so let’s continue with this tomorrow!
