RESET: 7 Ways to Refresh Your Faith

DAY 5 OF 7

Are you paying attention to the warning signs?

Hello, friend! I pray that your day today is filled with the miraculous presence of God.

Over the past week, I have been sharing about my experience with a warning sign that appeared in my car. I had literally been running on empty, and my carelessness caused my engine to think there was no more fuel!

As I look back at the days before the “check engine” light came on, I was amazed to find the number of times someone or something tried to help me notice what was right in front of me.

In one instance, a friend mentioned to me that my gas gauge indicator was on empty. My friend jokingly said I was running on fumes, and openly wondered if we would make it to our destination. For some reason, I ignored his playful caution and kept pushing the boundaries of common sense.

In another moment, I was between appointments and stopped to grab a quick bite to eat. As I ate in my parked car, because I was in such a hurry, I actually nodded off and fell asleep in the parking lot of the eatery.

In looking back, I am somewhat embarrassed but also thankful for the lessons learned. I love that I have a past, but I don’t need to get stuck there! My friend and my nap taught me two important lessons.

The first one is about fellowship. If I had listened to my friend Derek, I would have stopped, reset and refueled. In truth, we need each other to speak the truth, especially when our lives are out of balance. I John 1:7 says:

“But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7, NIV)

Fellowship with one another helps us stay in the light and in deep connection with Jesus, and when we are deeply connected to Jesus, sin—including the sin of busyness—can’t find a foothold. My friend, don’t allow isolation to drain your spiritual tank, and always remember this little piece of wisdom, “If the Devil can’t make you bad, he’ll make you busy!”

The second lesson I learned was about rest. Listen to the Word of God, as I should have before my impromptu nap in the restaurant parking lot!

“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29, NIV)

“The fear of the Lord leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble.” (Proverbs 19:23, NIV)

Take a moment and rest in God. If you are struggling or if you know of someone who is struggling, reach out. Take the spiritual initiative to refill your heart.

Don’t ignore the warning signs. Pay attention so your future can be filled with joy and hope.

And never forget...

You are a miracle!
