Biblical Leadership, the Example of JoshuaSample

Biblical Leadership, the Example of Joshua

DAY 21 OF 21

Joshua’s Farewell

“You shall cling to the Lord your God just as you have done to this day.” (Joshua 23:8)

When Joshua was 110 years old, his task as leader was complete. Very consciously, he ended his task by dividing the pieces of land that had not yet been assigned. His own family was also given a piece of land where they could settle. Although the conquest of the land was not yet complete, Joshua reminded the people, “The Lord your God will push [your enemies] back before you and drive them out of your sight. And you shall possess their land, just as the Lord your God promised you.” (Joshua 23:5)

This, of course, required that the people remain faithful to their God. That was Joshua's main concern, which he emphasized again and again in his farewell speeches. The people had to carefully observe the laws God had given (Joshua 23:6). They were never to serve other gods. Joshua himself set a good example here: “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!” (Joshua 24:15)

The whole people solemnly promised to remain faithful to the Lord. After that promise, Joshua said farewell. He died and was buried on his own piece of land, in the land he had conquered with God's help.

If you had the opportunity to address your entire nation, what topics would you want to address? What would you want to emphasize most?
