Ten Essentials for New Christians

DAY 6 OF 10

#6: Talk to God

On the night Jesus was betrayed, he met with his disciples in what is commonly called the Last Supper. One of the highlights of this dramatic evening is Jesus praying for his disciples and everyone who would believe in him. At the core of his prayer was his desire for all of us who believe in him to be in complete unity, showing the world that God loves us, just as he loves his Son.

“May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me” ( John 17:23).

But his prayer for us didn’t stop there. Because he loves us so much, Jesus continues to pray for us from his place at the right hand of the Father (Romans 8:34). Likewise, he wants you to be in constant conversation with him. Prayer is your direct line of communication with the Almighty God. Use it often.

Q&A

What If God Doesn’t Answer My Prayer?

You aren’t alone in asking this. It is a common question for people on the spiritual learning curve. It seems simple, doesn’t it? You expect God to have a yes or a no answer to your prayer, and God hasn’t given a clear indication either way. But there is a third alternative. Have you considered that God may have given you an answer: not yet?

God continues to stretch the faith of his children. We are usually anxious and want answers right away. God, on the other hand, wants us to learn to wait, be patient, and trust in him that he has everything under control. It is part of the sanctification process of spiritual growth. Remember that God is omniscient (knows everything past, present, and future) and sovereign (controls everything from the past, present, and future). At the very moment that you are praying, he might have the wheels in motion to bring about a result for the very thing you are praying about. But his timetable may be far different from yours. So, keep praying in accordance with his will. In the meanwhile, be comforted by this verse:

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them (Romans 8:28).”

God has not forgotten you. He is causing all of the details to work together for your benefit according to what he knows is best for you.
