DAY 3 OF 4

Why do we eat bread, drink juice, and call it communion?

Watch the video about communion together. Use the following questions and Bible verses to talk it over as a family.

Why did Jesus share bread and wine with His disciples the night before He died on the cross? Jesus wanted to show His disciples a way they could remember Him after He returned to Heaven. (Luke 22:14-20)

Why do we choose to remember the sad day Jesus died when we take communion? Jesus told us to, and His sacrifice was the best thing God ever did for us. Without Jesus dying on the cross for our sins and coming back to life, we couldn’t be made right with God. (Luke 22:19, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, Romans 6:9-10, 1 John 1:9)

Why do we call it communion when we eat the bread and drink the juice? When we take communion, we show we’re a part of a community of people who believe in and follow Jesus. It brings us closer to each other and closer to Jesus. Even the first people who followed Jesus met together for communion. (Acts 2:42-46)

How much bread and juice do we have to eat? How much or little you eat isn't what's important because communion isn’t a meal or a snack to fill you up. It’s a time to grow closer to Jesus, closer to each other, and to honor God. (1 Corinthians 11:20-22, 1 Corinthians 11:33-34)

What does communion remind us to do? It reminds us to think about the great sacrifice Jesus made for us, to thank Him for it, to live the way He did, and ask for His help and forgiveness for any ways we aren’t living like Him. (Matthew 26:26-28, 1 Corinthians 11:23-29)

If these questions show your child has a solid understanding of communion, consider taking communion together as a family. Open up conversations with leaders in your church to see if there are steps your child needs to follow to participate in taking communion as a part of your church community.
