Victory Over Insecurity a 5-Day Devotional by Dr. Robyn L. Gobin

DAY 5 OF 5

Day 5: Victory over insecurity.

When we face intolerable pressure, uncertainty, setbacks, or depression, insecurity can be hard to resist. But Jesus, in His loving kindness, provides an example of how we can resist the pride of insecurity. In Matthew 4:5-7, while Jesus was in the wilderness fasting for forty days and forty nights, the devil tried to entice Jesus into prideful self-reliance. Jesus gives a masterclass on how to be victorious over insecurity. Each time Satan tempted Him, Jesus used the truth of God’s word to reveal Satan’s lies. Thoughts that say, ‘You’re not good enough’ and ‘You don’t measure up’ are lies from the devil. We can resist the temptation to believe these lies by hiding the word of God in our hearts and speaking it with confidence each time we think, “I’m not good enough.” Instead of worshiping at the altar of our weaknesses and insecurities, we must make a consistent choice to surrender them by saying:

I know I cannot do this on my own, but when I tap into God’s strength, it is possible.

Although I think I have nothing meaningful to offer, I know God gave me special gifts and talents to share with the world.

I feel like I’m not good enough, but God’s spirit lives in me, and He is more than enough.

In 2 Corinthians 3:4-5, the Bible says, “We are confident of all this because of our great trust in God through Christ. It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualification comes from God.” We can speak confidently in the face of unworthiness and resist self-sufficiency because we recognize the source of our sufficiency.

Knowing the truths of God’s word equips us to speak truth confidently in the face of unworthiness whenever the need arises. Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” To resist the pride of insecurity, unworthiness, and self-sufficiency, we must fill up on God’s word by reading His word and committing it to memory. We can also ask God for the power we need to resist the pride of insecurity like the Apostle Paul prayed for the church at Ephesus in Ephesians 3:16 by praying:

Dear Heavenly Father,

I pray that from your glorious, unlimited resources, you will empower me with inner strength to resist the pride of insecurity through the Holy Spirit.

For many of us, winning the victory over insecurities will be a lifelong journey, much like Paul discusses the thorn in his side that was a constant reminder of His dependence on Christ (2 Corinthians 12:7). Working through insecurities for a long period of time is not necessarily an indication that something’s wrong. For some people, it just takes longer, and that is okay. In Ecclesiastes 9:11, the scriptures assure us that the race is not given to the swift. We need not grow weary, but instead, James 1:12 encourages us to remain steadfast. For when we have stood the rest, we will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

Rather than striving to reach the destination of full and complete freedom from insecurity, we can experience victory in the journey as God empowers, transforms, and strengthens us. The goal is not always to entirely rid our lives of insecurity but rather to change our relationship to our insecurities. We cannot control our thoughts and feelings, but we can control how we respond to thoughts and feelings of insecurity. Rather than accepting them as truth or covering them up with false humility, we can acknowledge the beliefs, speak the truth of God’s word over our perceived weaknesses, and pray for God to give us inner strength as we watch Him use us in spite of the areas where we feel not good enough.
