12 Rules for Life (Day 5 - 8)

DAY 4 OF 4

Day 8: The Power of Authenticity

Scripture: John 8:32

"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

Quote from Jordan Peterson: “Tell the truth - or, at least, don't lie.”

Journey back to early Christian Jerusalem. The nascent church community thrived on trust and unity. Yet, amidst this backdrop, Ananias and Sapphira chose deception over truth, leading to a tragic outcome. Their story serves as a powerful testament to the importance of honesty.

Peterson’s counsel, intertwined with the teachings of Jesus, offers the same timeless wisdom.

Authenticity isn't just a virtue; it's the cornerstone of freedom. When we embrace truth in our lives, we walk in the light, liberated from the chains of deceit.

Now, consider the daily masks we wear. How often do we curate our lives, fearing judgment or seeking approval?

Just this past week I was texting with a client and he sent me this verse in John 8:32. I love this verse and have done quite a few studies on it. One of the versions I came across frames this verse so well that I had to share it with my client, but also HAVE TO share it with you.

It goes like this, “The truth you know (and act upon) will set you free.”

Both of my hands are raised as guilty when it comes to reading so many of the truths in God’s Word but NOT DOING THEM. I have to repent all the time.

However, when you TAKE ACTION on these truths, your life changes dramatically.

Think about how many times you knew what you needed to do, but didn’t do it. You knew the right answer. You knew the truth but were unwilling to do the work for it to set you free.

I literally texted a client the other day to follow up on some items we had discussed. When I asked if he had done what we agreed upon - he said, “No, I haven’t.” I followed up to ask him, “Why not? What is stopping you?” He replied with, “Myself. My mind. Not making it a priority.”

You see, he knew the answer but was unwilling to allow that truth to set him free.

I really want you to take some time to sit with the Lord and dive into these questions below. Think about what is getting in your way, and I believe the Lord will show you and give you the courage to move forward.

Deep dive into these questions:

  • How can you, inspired by early Christian values, foster authenticity?
  • What fears prevent you from living your truth?
  • How can you ensure your words and actions align with God's truth?

Affirmation: "In authenticity, I find freedom. With God’s grace, I'll walk in truth."
