Quit Daydreaming: How to Wake Up & Break Free

DAY 4 OF 7

Renewed Mind, New Heart

One of the main factors that differentiates maladaptive daydreaming from dissociative personality disorders is the fact that those who engage in the practice are capable of distinguishing between reality and fantasy. This means a maladaptive daydreamer is fully aware they are playing out a story in their head.

This is also why many victims of the condition recognize its addictive and soul-sucking nature. Still, the thing about bad habits is, you really don’t realize how destructive they are until they’ve already begun to do their damage.

When I was addicted to fantasizing, I loved the perception of control I had in my daydreams so much that I didn’t even realize when I started to lose it in real life.

Ironically, in my attempt to distract myself from reality, I became so self-absorbed that I began to isolate myself from others.

Isolation and addiction go hand in hand, because a person stuck in a destructive cycle often feels like no one else can help them. As a result, they convince themselves their habit of choice is the only thing that can ease their pain.

The good news is although our hearts are naturally selfish, when we invite God into our lives, He gives us a new one. And after we confess our sins and surrender our lives to Him, He blesses us with a new beginning.

In the second book of Corinthians, the apostle Paul notes everyone who gives their life to Jesus Christ is transformed into a new creature.

While the world may condemn us when we mess up, God’s grace fully covers every mistake we have ever made to ensure old things like addictions, negative thinking patterns, and oppressive mindsets are done with, and everything else becomes new.

Of course, this is a gradual process. Still, when we delight in His word, He grants us the desires of our hearts. This is because when He abides in us and we abide in Him, He begins to align our hearts with His heart so that our desires reflect His will for our lives.

This is where true freedom and lasting fulfillment begin.
