A simple and seemingly insignificant choice can set in motion a series of events with generational impact. The story of Ruth beautifully exemplifies this truth.
Ruth, a woman from Moab, became united with an Israelite family through marriage. Tragedy struck as her husband, along with his father and brother, passed away, leaving Ruth alone with her mother-in-law, Naomi. At this crossroads, Ruth faced a crucial decision: whether to return to her homeland in Moab or journey to Judah with Naomi. Despite Naomi's encouragement to return, Ruth's heart had a different intention.
“Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God” (Ruth 1:16).
This was a game-changing moment. Ruth's choice to remain with Naomi marked the rest of her life. This decision showcased her loyalty and selflessness, as she embraced a new culture and faith. It spoke to her resilience and courage, two traits necessary for anyone who is preparing to make a game-changing decision.
The story continues as Ruth begins to work in the fields to bring home leftover grain for Naomi. Through Ruth’s unwavering commitment and diligent work in the fields, she captured the attention of Boaz, a prosperous landowner. As Ruth finds favor in the eyes of Boaz, a relationship begins to grow. Their eventual union brought not only personal fulfillment but also played a pivotal role in shaping the lineage leading to King David and, ultimately, to Jesus Christ.
The narrative of Ruth illuminates the concept that game-changing decisions and divine purposes often intersect through the intricate workings of our free will, obedience, and unexpected opportunities. Her story furthermore teaches the lesson that every action should be guided by love.
