DAY 1 OF 7

DAY 1: GOD

Why am I here? What is my purpose? Is there more to life than this?

These are just some of the many life questions that we are constantly asking ourselves. Questions that can often be challenging to answer or hard to perceive. Whenever we have questions about life or faith, it is always important to go to the place where it all began.

When my car breaks down, I don’t take it to an accountant; I take it to the manufacturer. It’s because the manufacturer knows the car better than I do. They understand what is happening with the car, and they have the tools to get the car back to its intended purpose. In the same way, whenever we have questions about life, we need to go to the Creator. This is because the Creator made us and knows us, and has everything we need to get back to our intended purpose.

This is why it’s important that we start this devotional with the Creator - God.

We believe that we were created by God. Genesis reminds us that in the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth, and everything in it. The plants, the animals, and even you and me. The truth is that all the answers to life’s big questions can be found in God. Our purpose. Our future. Our destiny. Our identity. Everything we are looking for can be found in Him.

So, who is God?

Christians believe in one God, who is revealed in three distinct persons: The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit. We refer to this as the Trinity. Although the word ‘Trinity’ does not appear in the Bible, we use it to refer to a truth that you find all throughout scripture.

Each person of God has a distinct role and a specific relationship with us personally. The function of the Father is to love us. He created us, He formed us, and He knows us.

The function of the Son (Jesus) is to save us. Jesus is the centrepiece of Christianity. He was born of a virgin and lived a life on earth for 33 years. It was His death and resurrection that saved us and brought us into eternal life with God. Jesus took our place even though we were sinners, and by His blood we are saved.

Finally, the function of the Holy Spirit is to be with us. The Holy Spirit comforts us, guides us, helps us and leads us. And we believe that when you accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, the Holy Spirit comes and dwells inside of us. Although each one is unique and distinct, the beauty of the Trinity is that all three persons exist in perfect unity and relationship with one another, and this gives us the example of what it means to live as a believer in relationship with each other.

The scripture is filled with references to the Trinity. From the creation of mankind to the baptism of Jesus; from the teachings of Jesus, to the letters of Paul; all of this points towards the triune God who loves us, saves us and is with us.

Understanding who God is, is an ongoing journey that every Christian believer stays on for their entire life. There is always more to learn about God. The goal is not to understand WHAT God is, the goal is to understand WHO God is. The same way we build relationships with people in our lives, is the same way to build a relationship with God. It is when we spend time with Him, when we pray, when we read the Bible, that God begins to reveal Himself to us.

PRAYER:
Dear God, I thank You for who You are. As I read Your word today, help me to know You more. Reveal Yourself to me so I can know who You are, and who I am. Thank You that You have a plan for my life, and You have a purpose for my future. Today I choose to trust that You are God, and I know that You hold my world in Your hands. I pray all of this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
