Why Bad Looks Good: Biblical Wisdom and Discernment

DAY 7 OF 7

When Bad Appears Beautiful

Have you ever seen someone from across the room and done a double take? Not because you thought you knew them, but because you wanted to. Judging by appearances is not a new phenomenon. Although the Bible clearly recognizes physical beauty, attractiveness does not always equate with righteousness.

We are quick to crown attractive people with a halo, assuming the best of them. But should we? The halo effect refers to our tendency to favorably misjudge attractive people, often attributing to them a wide variety of positive qualities they do not actually have. In short, we tend to give good-looking people the benefit of the doubt, again without any rational basis for our optimism.

The Bible describes beauty beyond physical terms. Thankfully, many people are indeed beautiful both inside and out. Shining with love and kindness, they are attractive visually, verbally, and behaviorally. Just take the time to verify that what you see and assume about a person is, in fact, as good as it looks.
