Face to Face With Jesus - a Lenten Meditation

DAY 1 OF 40

During this 40-day journey through the Bible, we will be looking at various one-on-one interactions between God and man (or woman as the case may be). In these interactions, we will look at what God sought from these rather ordinary people and how they in turn responded to God. These were real-world, regular conversations but that always left people changed with a fresh revelation of who God was and how they could know him better.

We read today of the triune creator God (Elohim) walking with Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden and giving them simple instructions for their safety and long-term enjoyment. They doubt His intentions, disobey His instructions and lose out on the communion they enjoyed with Him.

God created Adam from the dust and gave him the command to “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Gen 1:28 (NKJV) He created Eve from Adam’s rib and gave her the role of a helper to Adam. The fall that ensued changed these dynamics drastically until Jesus came to the earth. A foreshadowing of his redemptive power is seen in Genesis 3 verse 21 where God makes tunics of skin to clothe Adam and Eve which had to have happened by the shedding of blood. Jesus’ sinless blood covered our sins for all eternity and washed us spotlessly clean. The question remains if we will choose to get closer to God through his son Jesus or if we are content and comfortable knowing him at arm's length.

Questions to ask yourself:
Have you ever doubted the character of God?
Has your relationship with God been motivated by fear or love?
Will you choose your own comfort over close communion with God?
