Real Hope: Lessons on Leadership Through Deborah

DAY 2 OF 6

A Leader of Leaders

Deborah took God at His Word. So when she was given the message to give to Barak to attack Sisera, she didn’t flinch. Even though Sisera had a formidable army and 900 chariots of iron, she delivered God’s message to Barak with confidence: ‘Has not the Lord, the God of Israel, commanded you?’ (Judges 4:6 ESV).

Barak had faith to believe that God spoke to him through Deborah. He even had the confidence to trust God’s promise for victory (and is recognized for his faith in Hebrews 11:32). But his faith would be reinforced to go forth against insurmountable odds if Deborah agreed to join him. Deborah courageously agreed to go. After she pledged to accompany him, Barak recruited ten thousand men to meet Sisera’s 900 chariots. Deborah was a leader of leaders. As they prepared for battle, she gave a brief motivational speech. The Israelites had no reason to be in fear, for God was on their side. Knowing the outcome was already decided in heaven, Deborah talked as though Israel had already won. Such boldness results from an unwavering faith in God's goodness and power. Centuries later, the apostle Paul expressed the same type of resolve: If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31b NIV).
