Making Peace With Saying No!

DAY 2 OF 3

Revelation of Jesus’ Priority

So how did Jesus respond to Martha’s demand for Him to tell Mary to get up and help Martha?

Luke 10:41-42, TPT records Jesus as responding, “Martha, my beloved Martha. Why are you upset and troubled, pulled away by these many distractions? Mary has discovered the one thing most important by choosing to sit at my feet. She is undistracted, and I won't take this privilege from her.”

I’m amazed by Jesus’ mastery of the situation.

Martha’s words of interruption probably carried unexpected heat. Yet with gentle correction, Jesus refused to do what Martha had asked because she had asked amiss. Matthew 6:33 clearly gives first priority to seeking the Kingdom of God. Jesus, The Living Expression of God, was in Martha’s house, teaching, and Martha wanted to pull Mary away from Jesus and His teaching. Since Martha’s priorities conflicted with Kingdom priorities, Jesus rejected her request. Jesus said No!

Reflections:

I marvel at how Jesus engaged Martha. Jesus, The Living Expression of God, gave a masterclass in saying No lovingly. I consider 1 Cor 13:5, TPT that shares: “Love does not traffic in shame and disrespect, nor selfishly seek its own honor. Love is not easily irritated or quick to take offense.” I see my need for wisdom in this area by contrasting my initial thoughts of anger, criticism, and offense with Jesus’ response.

God knows my shortcomings and continues to love me. 1 Cor 13:8, TPT asserts: “Love never stops loving.” Knowing this, I depend on God’s love and look to Him for the wisdom I need. Why? Because I know God will generously give me the wisdom I need without faulting or putting me down (James 1:5).

Love prompted Jesus to say No to Martha’s request while demonstrating steadfast care for her being.

Wrap yourself in the comfort of Jesus’ words in Matthew 11:28-30, TPT: “Are you weary, carrying a heavy burden? Come to me. I will refresh your life, for I am your oasis. Simply join your life with mine. Learn my ways and you’ll discover that I’m gentle, humble, easy to please. You will find refreshment and rest in me. For all that I require of you will be pleasant and easy to bear.”

Amen!
