Walking in the Light

Scripture:

And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants. John 3:19-21 NLT

Okay, stop. This is a lot to take in. We are going to take this verse by verse so we don’t miss a thing.

Observation:

Starting in verse 19, Jesus says, “God’s light has come into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light for their actions were evil.” First, what is God’s light and how did it come into the world? The answer is Jesus, and Jesus doesn’t only shine light. Jesus is light.

In fact, just a couple chapters later in the book of John, Jesus straight up says, “But while I am here in the world, I am the light of the world.” John 9:5 NLT

So now that we have identified who the light is, we can move on to the second half of this verse: “...but people loved the darkness more than the light.”

This is not just something people struggled with back then; it’s a temptation we still face now. Will we love our sinful habits more than we love Jesus? Which do we value more? Are we willing to die to our desires to follow Jesus? That is what it came down to then, and what it comes down to now. Our actions reflect what we truly value. Do our actions keep us in the dark or do they line up with the light?

Application:

What are some things you need to bring to the light? If the thought of bringing your habits and secrets out into the open makes you feel nervous, what you need to know is that you can come to the light hurt and broken. You can struggle through every step to get there, but don’t let anything hold you back. Because we don’t have to hide anymore. We can bring all of us, even the parts of us that we don’t like, the parts that we are ashamed of, into the light for Jesus to see and heal. He wants to. Bring your whole self to God today and let Him begin the process of healing your heart.

Prayer:

Jesus, thank you for being the light. I pray that you would help me walk close to you, in your light. I pray that anytime I stray away that you would pull me back in and that your light would guide my life. I pray that the rest of the world sees your light and walks in it with you too. Amen.
