Praying Over Your Home

DAY 2 OF 5

Your Living Room or Den

I lived in the same home from the time I was 7 until I graduated from high school. After five years of marriage, Nancy and I moved into a home when our son was six months old and moved out 32 years later.

The living rooms in those homes were the center of our family activities. We connected as a family. We grew closer to each other. We learned to love each other no matter what. We played, had fun, watched movies and TV shows together, celebrated life events, and gathered to mourn together when a loved one passed away. When friends and neighbors came to visit, the living room was the place we gathered.

In the home where I grew up, the living room holds great memories for me. The same is true for the home where Nancy and I raised our kids. My parents’ living room was where I got my first kiss; where I was comforted and, in later years, gave comfort. It was a safe place, always. It was where we read the Bible and prayed and where we connected with family and friends.

God wants us to love him and love each other well. He tells us in John 13:34 that it is the greatest commandment. Today let’s think about that verse in regards to our homes. Your home is the setting where much of your married life and family life will be lived, and it is worth being very intentional to pursue obeying God’s “love” commands here.

I love that the Bible speaks to laughter. Like in the verse in Job we read today, God wants us to be filled with joy and laughter. That verse is a great encouragement to “once again” be filled with joy, even if it’s something that has fallen by the wayside in your home. So let’s cultivate that joy and laughter in our homes.

Today, think about your living room. Is it a place where people feel loved and welcomed? Is it a place of laughter and joy? What is it today? And what can it become tomorrow?

Use this guide as you invite God’s presence into your Living Room.

  • For joy and laughter to fill your living room.
  • That Godly influence would infiltrate your family's life through time together in this room.
  • That God would help you to help carry each other’s burdens.
  • That this would be a place to love as Jesus loves.
  • That great, lasting, life shaping memories would come from time together in this room.
