Bible in a Year

DAY 3 OF 365

So far, I’m sure you’ve run into a few things in your study that make you scratch your head and wonder what in the world you’re reading. There’s some pretty crazy stuff in the Bible that’s hard to understand, and I’ve found that doing some research before diving into a passage helps me get the most out of it. So, I did some research for you and will be explaining what we call context throughout this plan.

First up, it’s important to note that the Bible is more like a library than a single book. It’s made up of 66 individual books in different genres, at different times in history, with different authors. Nowadays, we break them down into groups like this:

Pentateuch: Genesis-Deuteronomy, written by Moses

Historical books: Joshua-Esther

Books of wisdom: Job-Song of Songs

Major prophets (because they’re long, not more important): Isaiah-Daniel

Minor prophets (because they’re shorter, not less important): Hosea-Malachi

These are the books of the Old Testament, written before Jesus came down into human history.

There’s another set of books written about Jesus’ life and the church after he went back to heaven that we call the New Testament:

Gospels: Matthew-John

History: Acts

Letters written by the Apostle Paul: Romans-Philemon

Other letters: Hebrews-Jude

Apocalyptic prophecy (about Jesus’ second coming): Revelation

I made a video for you explaining some more details about the Old and New Testaments, and, as we go through this plan, I’ll include some more videos explaining the genres. Hang in there!
