Developing Your Team's Character

DAY 5 OF 5

Developing Your Team's Character - Part V

Coach Tommy Bowden developed a system to help shape the character of his football players called CARDS. Commitment. Accountability. Responsibility. Discipline. Finally, we'll consider S for sacrifice.

For a football team to become a high-performing team, there are times when individual players may need to sacrifice their personal desires for the team's good.

In business, each person might also need to make personal sacrifices for the sake of the organization's mission. It may be handing off an account to someone better able to serve the customer or taking a humbling assignment.

Hebrews 13:16 teaches, "And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased."

Train your people to remember that the mission's good sometimes requires personal sacrifice.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Why are some team members and employees unwilling to sacrifice for the team's good?

  • According to Hebrews 13:16, with what type of sacrifices is God pleased?

  • Employers and team leaders are also called upon to sacrifice. What type of sacrifices have you made lately for the good of your team?

Dear Lord, You are a good and glorious God who calls us to be committed, accountable, responsible, disciplined, and sacrificial in the workplace and help develop these character traits in our employees and team members. This isn't always easy or pleasant. Younger employees may not have had as much practice, and more seasoned employees may be too set in their ways to grow and change. Thank You for being our helper, for giving us Your grace and Your words to lead and guide us in righteousness. Help us be gentle but firm and determined shepherds to those whom You have entrusted us. Amen.
