What Is God’s Will for Me?

DAY 5 OF 5

God’s Will Is for You to Be Submissive

Ephesians 5:17-21 “Therefore do not be unwise but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God.”

This week we have been focusing on the grand topic of the will of God. It is God’s will that everyone repents and believes in Jesus for salvation. As His children, it is God’s will we obey His written Word, the Holy Bible. God has a plan for every life, and His will is not some mysterious code only a select few can decipher. No, He desires we live fulfilled, blessed lives, and the way we do this is by living out His clear will and plan for us. In Ephesians 5:17-21, the Apostle Paul tells us to understand what God’s will is, and then he instructs on what God’s will actually is for the follower of Jesus. The same apostle teaches us what is clearly God’s will for every Christian in 1 Thessalonians 4:3: “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality.”

God indeed has a will, a plan, a design for His children and for His Church. A part of God’s will for you and me is for us to submit to one another. Whoa, wait a minute some of you might protest and say you do not like the word submit! Before you get all wound up, please take note this is God’s idea not man's. As we submit to each other and put others’ needs before our own wants and wishes, we are doing exactly what God desires for us to do. We are accomplishing His will for our lives when we submit to each other.

Submitting to each other reminds me of some of the other “one another” commandments in the New Testament: Romans 12:10 “Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;” Romans 15:7 “Therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us, to the glory of God.” We are to “admonish one another” (Romans 15:14), greet one another (Romans 16:16). There are many more "one another" commandments in Scripture, but I think you get the picture.

Can you imagine how unified and harmonious our churches would be if we put into practice all these “one another” commandments? We would have no strife or division, no schisms, and no one taking offense. Keep in mind, this is God’s design for us as His children. It is His will that we live like this in community with one another. If we all tried to outdo the other in acts of love and godly submission, wow, what a church we would be!

You may be seeking God’s will for some very important specifics in your life right now: who to date, who to marry, what friends to make, where to live, what school to attend, what city to live in, which job to take, and on and on. I truly believe God has a plan for each one of these. Here is what is really neat: if you will align yourself with God’s will in the things you know to be His will for your life like submitting to one another, then God will make it plain the areas where you do not currently understand what His will is.
