The Bible: Fake News or Good News?

DAY 1 OF 6

What Is the Bible?

The Bible is the most widely sold and stolen book in history. Some see it as outdated and irrelevant, while others see it as inspired and holy. Either way, there’s no denying the influence the Bible has had on the world. Over the course of this Plan, we’ll think deeply about what the Bible is, how it’s meant to be used, and whether or not it’s even worth believing. So, let’s dive in. Is the Bible fake news or good news?

First, let’s acknowledge that throughout history people have pointed to the pages of the Bible as the place where they encountered the presence of God in a powerful way. And they have been radically changed as a result. As Christians, we believe the Bible is not like any other book. There’s something special about it—something miraculous

The problem comes from trying to force the Bible to be something it’s not. When we do, we miss out on the magic and the mystery that God has in store for us. So let’s start with this foundational question: What exactly is the Bible?

Here’s what it’s not:

The Bible is not a textbook with the answers to all of our questions.

It’s not a rule book with all the rules of life.

It’s not just a book of inspiring quotes to make us feel better when we’re feeling bad.

And it’s not a self-help book full of tips and tricks to make our lives better.

While the Bible contains some of all of those things, It is so much more than any one of those things.

So, what is it? The Bible is a story that leads to Jesus and invites us to become like Jesus

One thing that makes the Bible unique is that it is actually not a single book, but a collection of books. When we open the Bible, we’re stepping into a library of writings that are all telling the same story. The story of Jesus. The Bible is a collection of story, history, parable, poetry, letters, laws, and so much more. This vast array of work was written by dozens of authors over the course of hundreds of years, and the entire process was inspired and guided by God’s Spirit.

The beauty of the Bible is that it doesn’t just inform us, but it has the power to transform us. The Bible exists to bring us to Jesus and make us more like Jesus. That process of change and transformation usually happens slowly as our old ways of thinking are replaced by the truth of Jesus and the working of God’s Spirit.

Today, just remember this: The Bible is a story that leads us to Jesus, and invites us to become like Jesus
