Finding Holy Leisure in the Gospel of MarkSample

Finding Holy Leisure in the Gospel of Mark

DAY 3 OF 4

Finding Trust During Life’s Interruptions

A life of holy leisure implies a life that’s not hurried and submitted to God’s timetable for our lives. Jesus was interruptible because he loved people, more than he loved his schedule. It’s through his interruptions that we see an even fuller display of his power over sickness and death.

Interruption #1

Jesus was on his way to heal Jairus’ daughter, who was at the point of death, when a woman touched his garment. People were pressing in on him from every side, but Jesus could sense that power had gone out from him, so he stopped and asked, “Who touched me?”

The unnamed woman, who likely preferred not to be seen or heard, crept into the fray of the pressing crowds to touch Jesus, and now she wanted to sneak out. Her twelve-year battle with incessant bleeding made her unclean, broke, and at her rope’s end. Jesus was her last chance and only hope. Once she touched his garment, she was instantly healed.

Jesus tenderly pulled her out of the shadows and drew attention to her miraculous healing. He lovingly reassured her that her status was no longer “unclean,” now she was “Daughter” and it was her well-placed faith in him that had made her well.

Yet, as wonderful as this miracle was, it set Jairus’ original errand further behind schedule. Then an interruption within an interruption happened.

Interruption #2

“While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” The delay of interruption #1 proved life-giving for one, yet was deadly for the other.

Was Jairus thinking, “If only we hadn’t stopped, would my daughter still be alive?” But Jesus said to him, “Do not fear, only believe,” and continued to his house. When Jesus made it to the little girl, for the second time that day he touched the unclean and made it clean. Immediately, the dead girl became alive and bounded out of bed, and walked into the kitchen for a meal.

Are You Interruptible?

Jesus was interruptible because he loved people. We often become stressed when we’re interrupted because it steers us further away from our plans. But, maybe God is using interruptions to work out an even greater plan in your life?

The question is, what will you love more today, your schedule or the people God divinely puts in your path?
