DAY 4 OF 7

Making Decisions

One part of adulting is that you have to make a lot of decisions. You have to choose where to live, whether to go to college or not, what job to pick, who to be friends with, and who to date. There are many things to choose in life, and part of being an adult is making all of those choices for yourself.

So how can we make the best choices? We need to exercise wisdom. And the best thing about wisdom is that God freely gives it to us if we ask. James 1:5 even says, “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” God isn’t going to make fun of us if we don’t know the answer to all of life’s questions. Instead, he’ll give us the wisdom that we need when we ask him for it. The whole Bible is full of wisdom and advice on making the right decisions, but the book of Proverbs is especially full of wise teachings. Proverbs 1:7 shows us where to start in our search for wisdom: “Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.”

The first thing we need to do to find wisdom is to fear the Lord. Fearing God doesn’t mean we need to be afraid of him literally — it means we need to respect his Word as the authority for our life and view him as the ultimate Lord of our lives. If we want wisdom, we can pray and ask God for it, but we also need to be spending time reading God’s Word to see what he has already said about how we should live life. One easy way to hear wisdom every day is by reading one chapter of Proverbs every day. Conveniently, there are 31 chapters in Proverbs, so reading one a day for a month would ultimately end in reading the whole book of Proverbs! What decisions are you facing today? What decisions in your life need wisdom?

Challenge: Commit to reading through the book of Proverbs over the next month. Start by reading the first chapter today, then continue to read one chapter per day for the next 31 days.
