Uncommen: Dad Strong

DAY 1 OF 5

Setting Godly Expectations

We are going to be looking at Proverbs 3:5-6 because it is written from a father to a son. The Bible sets Godly expectations for what it means to be a dad. In this study, we'll consider how to be Godly dads who love the Lord and instruct our children with the Word.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart

You must trust that God is in control of your circumstances. No matter the day, week, or month, we can trust that He's working for His glory and our good. You might have envisioned that having children would have come easier or that raising babies would be simpler, but life has a way of dispelling our expectations. Trusting that God is in control brings great comfort.

Do not lean on your own understanding

Your understanding is flawed and sinful. The Lord's is perfect. The choice is obvious. Don't trust or follow your heart. Follow the Lord. Seek counsel from the Holy Spirit. When babies and toddlers are constantly crying, or your teenager is difficult, the answer isn't found in your brain. The answer is found in the Word. It also takes consistent and fervent prayer.

In all your ways acknowledge him

How can we acknowledge God in our life? Well, when we become dads, it puts us in a unique position. We begin to more readily understand the relationship of God to a child of God. It should make you step back in awe of how much He loves you despite your disobedience. His love for you should become evident. We acknowledge him by giving thanks, living joyfully, and sharing Him with our children.

He will make straight your paths

God will guide and correct your path. Does this sound familiar? Sounds like your job as a dad. This should make us reflect on God's role as our heavenly father. We should listen to Him (through the Word), receive his correction, and follow his commands.
