A Week Of Worship

DAY 6 OF 7

What are idols?

An idol is anyone or anything that’s more important to you than God.

It’s easy to figure out what idol the Israelites worshiped. They gave all of their expensive jewelry to make a calf out of gold. They gave the things they loved the most to the golden calf and sang and danced for it. God wasn’t the most important in their hearts anymore, the calf was. The calf was an idol.

If you don’t have a statue that you pray to or give things to, it might be harder to find out if you have an idol. Ask yourself some questions to find out if something is more important to you than God is.

  • How do you spend your time? If you spend a lot of time on something that distracts you from God, it might be an idol.
  • What do you care about the most? If you care about something more than you care about God, it might be an idol.
  • When you find out you’re really good at something, how do you act? If you start thinking you’re better than other people or that you don’t need God’s help, that thing you’re really good at might be an idol.

Lots of things can be idols: games, friends, phones, clothes, toys, food, money, pets, sports, music, videos, money… you can even be an idol to yourself!

It’s not okay to worship any of those things. But God is good. Ask Him to forgive you and help you. You can make Him the most important one in your life again.

Talk It Over: What idols do you think you have? How can you show you love God more than those things?
