Service to God and Others

Work―avodah―is not just a blessing from the Lord, it’s how we serve God and demonstrate our love for Him. How can you serve God through your work? By doing it to please Him―with excellence, integrity, and joy. By working with all your heart for God, as opposed to people. By letting your faith be reflected in the way you do your work. This is how we serve and love God through our work, and how others will see our faith.  

Serving God in our work naturally leads to serving others. Our workplaces can be filled with demands, stress, and conflict. Personality conflicts, communication breakdowns, mistakes, and issues at work all come with being human. But no matter who your earthly boss is, or what your co-workers are like, you ultimately work for the Lord. Your work is a tremendous opportunity to bring joy, peace and love into stressful situations at work.

The Holy Spirit in us gives us the power to share compassion and empathy with others, and to find ways to go above and beyond when we see a coworker, leader or customer who needs help, and face difficult interactions with grace and respect.  

• Share compassion. It can be through something as simple as an encouraging word, praying with someone who is having a tough time or offering to help someone who is struggling.  


• Demonstrate love. Producing excellent work, acknowledging the contributions of others, being kind under all circumstances, and speaking the truth are ways love can be shared at work. 


• Show respect. Give people your full attention. Listen and respect their perspectives. You don’t have to agree, but you can always show respect and seek to understand.

The workplace presents an abundance of opportunities to serve others with love and in so doing, we share Christ’s love with them.

Prayer

Father God, thank You for the privilege of being able to do my work in service to you and others. Help me to be a light to all I come in contact with through my work so that I point others to You in all I do. May it be for Your glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
