DAY 11 OF 14

Life IS... Learning to Forgive

As you begin winding down this 14-day journey to a new you, there's another area you should consider examining, so it doesn't become a stumbling block for the enemy to use against you.  This is the area of unforgiveness.

After discussions with many of my friends, I have discovered that seeds of unforgiveness are present in families, the workplace, and even our worship places. This spirit of offense is real, powerful, and divisive.  If it is not dealt with, it can be destructive.  When we look at various issues in our world today, more than likely, unforgiveness is at the root.

Unforgiveness almost destroyed the relationship between my middle sister and me.  One morning after our mother's passing, she came to me and began to share things that I had done over the years, which offended her.  By her initiating that conversation, it also opened the door for me to share as well.  After listening to each other, we apologized and agreed to leave those things in the past.

As believers in the word of God, we both had to examine ourselves and be willing to lay down our weapons of offense.  For me, at that moment, I could hear God saying, "if you want the blessings that I have planned for you, then you must TRULY FORGIVE and let go of the anger.".  Eventually, I was able to surrender and obey God truly; but it didn't happen overnight.  It took what I call a give us this day our DAILY bread walk to get to that place.  Both my sister and I had to commit to working through the unforgiveness.

Holding on to bitterness, jealousy, anger, and other things that breed unforgiveness does not benefit you in the long run.  It only brings about further pain and hatred. Also, unforgiveness can be unhealthy to your mind, body, and spirit.

Sometimes, learning to forgive requires effective communication and a willingness to try and understand someone else's feelings. Other times, you might need to forgive someone who you can't talk to - God might call you to forgive someone to free you from the offense and unnecessary bitterness.

Reflection:

Are you holding on to unforgiveness?  If so, begin today by trying to release the person or persons.  Trust God through the process and allow him to help you let it go. Someone once said unforgiveness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.

Prayer:

Father, teach me how to walk in forgiveness.  Heal my broken and wounded heart so that I may love others who have hurt me, in the same manner, that you love me when I have often hurt you,  In Jesus name, Amen.
