Reality Check

DAY 8 OF 21

Trees in the wild do not receive water through intentional irrigation. Instead, their water source typically comes through seasonal rains. Regular rainfall not only benefits the trees immediately by watering the soil, it also fills the water tables that lie below the ground’s surface, creating ample reserves accessible by the deep roots of the trees.

However, in times of drought, even the hardiest of trees will show strain. A drought can greatly slow or even arrest the growth of a tree, leaving a tree vulnerable to injury, pests, disease, or even death. Even when a drought is short lived, the impact of water stress on a tree may require several years of recovery.

Just like trees who need a steady source of water to thrive, Paul reminds his fellow Christians, and each of us, to remain grounded in Christ Jesus, continuing on strong in our daily walk of faith. Paul understands the temptation of this world and how easily we can be pulled away from our Source. He knows how susceptible we become when we let our focus slip, and our spirits to become malnourished. But when we “walk in him”, we grow increasingly stronger. As we feast on the richness of the Word, our faith roots grow deeper and deeper and we become more resilient, abounding in joy and thanksgiving.

Anne Graham Lotz once said, “Faith is like a tender plant, rooted in Christ alone, watered by the Spirit and the Word, strengthened by the winds of adversity and the sunshine of blessing.”

May we all be mighty oaks of righteousness, eternally rooted in faith, and overflowing with thankfulness.

Take some time today to practise being rooted in Him through prayer, becoming aware of His presence, and reading scripture.
