Everyday Life in Revelation: Part 2 the Church

DAY 7 OF 7

The Laodicean church was probably the wealthiest and most self sufficient churches presented in Revelation 2 and 3. The irony has to be noted, because this church thought they needed nothing. Laodicea was a wealthy center for banking and textile production, and also boasted a medical school that was famous in the ancient world for the production of an eye salve.

It seems the church in Laodicea had grown very comfortable with their culture. Jesus challenged them in the midst of their comfort, telling them to buy gold refined in fire from Him, purchase white garments of righteousness that would cover their nakedness, and to get salve that would truly cure their blindness.

Jesus was showing the true state of this church. They thought they were wealthy, refined and healthy. Jesus showed their true state to be poor, naked and blind. That condition is not exclusive to the Laodicean church. It extends to any church or any person who thinks that their accomplishments and works merit God’s favor.

So how about you? Do you place your confidence in your works or Christ’s? Do you have more in common with the culture in which you live or with the kingdom of God? Daily do you seek to align your heart with the heart of God, or do you think you have life under control and need not seek God’s direction and wisdom?

If you find yourself to be in the same patterns as the Laodicean church, take heart. There is a solution! Jesus makes the offer. As He knocks on your door, you just have to open yourself up to Him. He will be faithful to enter and give you His fellowship.
