You Awaken Me

Have you ever had trouble waking up? The average person hits the snooze button 2-3 times and ends up taking 24 minutes to finally get up. Each snooze means you’ll have to skip something—making the bed, eating breakfast, brewing coffee. Many think it’s worth it. 

Waking up to God’s Spirit means you become alert to His presence, aware of His love, and engaged in His will. This kind of awakening releases spiritual strength, guidance, and energy. Without it, you may find yourself spiritually drowsy. You’re going through life, but very little life is going through you. 

In the song, You Awaken Me, the chorus reminds us that Jesus came to give us new life:

Now I’m walking in Your freedom

Your resurrection power lives in me

And it’s all because of Jesus

My heart is beating, and I’ve come alive

Come alive

‘Cause You awaken me

One way Jesus spoke of this new life is “light.” Jesus stated that when you live by His light, more light is given to you, and more of His life comes alive in you. Rather than take offense, you give grace. Rather than obsess about outcomes, you trust God with your future. Rather than being self-focused, you put others first.

Jesus also spoke of this new life by using the idea of “awakening.” There were two occasions where Jesus brought someone back to life: Jairus’s daughter and Lazarus. In both cases, Jesus said these people were not dead, but asleep. People thought Jesus was mistaken or deluded, some even laughed, but as soon as He spoke, these two woke up and came back to life. 

Before we come to God, we’re in a state of spiritual death. But, Jesus calls us to “wake up!” so we can receive the gift of new life. He wants to restore what is lost, and turn our worst dead end into a new beginning. We can’t earn it, and we don’t deserve it. We just simply respond to His voice. 

Has life become dull, leaving you spiritually sleepy? It’s time to awaken to His grace, goodness, calling, unconditional love, leading, presence, gifts, and Holy Spirit so that you can awaken to His purpose for your life!

Little girl, wake up! Lazarus come out! Awaken to the new life He is growing within you. Don’t hit snooze on God. Come alive, and pray, “Jesus, awaken me!”
