Real Hope: Walking in Wisdom

DAY 5 OF 5

What Are We Known for?

2020 has brought us a lot of challenges, and among them is the need to navigate “cancel culture”. The BBC describes cancel culture as the term for when individuals or companies face swift public backlash and boycott over offensive statements or actions. These can range from criminal offences to past mistakes that are dug up on social media. Celebrities cop it the most because their lives are always on show.

In a way, Christians, too, are always on show. In the workplace, people will notice our work ethic, and hear the way we talk about our bosses. When our kids misbehave in the supermarket, people will notice the way we speak to them. When we speak to our spouses (or about them) at dinner parties, people will notice the words we choose and the manner in which we use them.

As Christians, we’re told to act wisely in the way we walk and the way we talk. We should be careful that we don’t squander opportunities to share God’s love to others. And yet it’s important that we don’t put on a different character when we’re in the public eye. That just means we’re hypocrites. Instead, we are called to live out our faith in every aspect of our lives.

In a world of cancel culture, wouldn’t it be fantastic if believers were known for their love and kind words, and as those who live as people transformed by Jesus, ready to serve?
